Sanjay Behura, Ph.D.

Bio

Dr. Sanjay Behura leads a research program in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, with a focus on the Photophysics of Quantum Materials. His work centers on understanding and engineering light–matter interactions in two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures, with the goal of advancing technologies for quantum information science. He directs the SDSU Photophysics of Quantum Materials Lab, where a multidisciplinary approach integrates quantum materials design and growth, quantum device fabrication, and advanced optical characterization.

The group’s research spans solid-state quantum emitters, moiré excitonics, and quantum sensing, with an emphasis on bridging fundamental discoveries and practical quantum technologies. His work is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Shackelford Faculty Research Startup Fund.

His group has made significant contributions to the direct synthesis of 2D materials, surface-junction photovoltaics, and solid-state quantum photonics, resulting in 56 peer-reviewed journal publications, six patents or patent applications, and more than 50 invited talks. He is deeply committed to mentorship and has trained nearly 50 postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students, helping to develop the next generation of scientists in quantum science.

In recognition of his contributions to research and education, Dr. Behura received the Thomas B. Day Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Physics (2025), Outstanding Faculty Awards in Physics (2024 and 2026), and was named a Scialog Fellow in Quantum Matter and Information (2025–2027) by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
