Abstract:

Twenty years ago there was only one proton therapy center in the USA, now there are about fifteen, and several others are in development stages.  What has changed?  Proton therapy is expensive, so why so many institutions are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to set up new centers?  It is because proton therapy does offer clear dosimetric advantages over conventional x-ray therapy.  This talk will focus on the physics behind this superiority and the clinical implementation of proton therapy.
